Search chat history

The chat history search feature lets you search across your own past Glean chats and agent runs directly from the left sidebar. This helps you revisit earlier threads and pick up where you left off faster.

You can search chat threads and agent runs by title.

note

The current release searches titles only. Message bodies are not searched yet.

Prerequisites

Chat History must be enabled by your admin before you can search past chats.

note

If your organization has disabled Chat History, or if retention has removed older threads, those conversations will not appear in results.

Requirements and availability

  • Supported across deployments: Available for all supported clouds (AWS, Azure, GCP) and with both Glean Key and customer‑managed keys.
  • Your own history only: Chat history search returns threads and runs from your account, respecting permissions and data controls of your organization.

Searching your chat history

  1. Open Glean.
  2. Click the search icon at the top of the chat history to open the search bar.
  3. Type a keyword from the thread title, for example, the topic or the agent name.
  4. Select the matching thread to open it.

Tips:

  • Use distinctive words from how the thread title appears in your history.
  • If you ran an agent, try including the agent name in your search term.

Filtering your chat history

You can filter your chat history by the content types and features used in the chat.

  1. Open Glean.
  2. Click the search icon at the top of the chat history to open the search bar.
  3. Inside the search modal, click the filter icon to open the filter options.
  4. Select the content types and features you want to filter by (for example, Documents).

Manage your chat history

You control whether your own chats are saved, and you can delete your history at any time.

Turn your chat history on or off

Even when your organization has Chat History enabled, you can opt out for your own account:

  1. Go to Profile → Your settings → Preferences → Privacy.
  2. Under Chat history, use the toggle (for example, "Allow chat history to be saved up to one year" — the label reflects your organization's retention period).
  • On: your chats are saved up to your organization's retention period.
  • Off: your chats are not stored, even if chat history is enabled for your organization.

You can't set a custom number of days. You can only choose whether to participate in chat history or turn it off entirely.

Delete your chat history

You can delete your own chat history from within Glean:

1

Open Glean

Go to Glean.

2

Open the settings menu

Click the settings icon in the top-right corner of the page.

3

Troubleshooting steps

  • I do not see the search bar in chat history
    • Refresh your browser tab and try again.
    • Confirm that your organization has Chat History enabled.
    • Check if your thread is outside retention window of your organization.
  • I cannot find a conversation I remember
    • Try alternate title keywords, for example, the project name or a unique phrase you would expect in the title.
    • Verify the conversation occurred under your account and not a shared screen or a different login.

Limitations

  • This feature only supports searching across past chat titles. It does not support searching across chat responses.
